The Crown Jewel of Gold

A couple of days ago, Mary took me to the Ironstone Vineyard Heritage Museum not far from her home. The most interesting display was The Krautz Crystalline Gold Specimen also known as The Crown Jewel. According to a provided pamphlet (in part)….

The Kautz gold specimen is the largest single piece of gold mined in North America since the 1880’s. It is unique in that it is not only the largest mass of gold specimen found in California since the turn of the century, but it is also the largest specimen of crystallized gold in existence today. Of equal importance, it is gold in its rarest form – crystallized. It is priceless in value. Crystalline specimens are extremely rare and sell at a premimum price as high as $6,000 per ounce.

More or less this nugget is about 2 feet high and 1 foot wide and weighs 44 pounds.

I really enjoy experiencing all things unique.
